The victim a 25 year old male was shot in the upper leg with a small caliber handgun. The victim was treated on scene by Northwest First Responders and Lamar Point VFD and then transported to Paris Regional Hospital by Paris EMS. The Victim was in stable condition, and treated and released at hospital.
Further, the suspect in the shooting, a 41 year old male, Darren Scott Shelton w/m DOB 01-12-1972 who had left the scene prior to law enforcement arrival called 911 stating that he had been grazed in the scuffle and wanted to see an Officer. Sheriff Deputies learned that Shelton had come to the victim’s residence with a small caliber firearm pointing it at the victim. The victim’s step-brother struck Shelton in the face with his fist and struggled with Shelton to take the firearm from him. During the struggle Shelton shot the victim in his leg and the bullet also struck the step-brother in the leg with no medical attention needed by the step-brother. Shelton fled the scene before Deputies arrived.
A short time later Shelton was found hiding in an outbuilding at his residence in the Lamar Point area. Shelton was transported to Paris Regional Medical center for minor injuries and then placed in the Lamar County Jail awaiting arraignment.
Shelton was charged with two counts of Aggravated Assault with a Deadly Weapon and Unlawful Possession of a Firearm by a Felon. Further investigation to continue.
