Paris police officers were dispatched to the 3700 block of Pine Mill Road early today after a man was reported removing air conditioners from residences.

When police arrived, they found John Lewis Cawvey, 26, of 152 NW 24th St. in the process of placing an air conditioner into his vehicle, said Curtis Garrett, public information officer for the Paris Police Department.

Cawvey was arrested without incident when it was determined he did not have permission to remove the air condtioners.

He was charged with theft over $1,500, a felony.

Police responded Thursday to 87 calls for services and arrested eight people. Officers responded to one burglary of a residence and two reported thefts where suspects removed air conditioners.

One call brought police officers to the 100 block of Northwest 19th Street, where two men were reported fighting.

Officers saw a man identified as Wayne Alan Birch, 70, of 109 NW 19th St., strike the other man, and the two men fell to the ground.

Birch continued to assault the other man, and officers separated both men, Garrett said.

Birch was arrested for injury to an elderly person.
