2-year-old in critical condition after rope tying a dog to a tree wrapped around his neck

A 2-year-old child was in critical condition today in a Dallas hospital after a rope that attached a dog to a tree in a Paris backyard wrapped around the child’s neck on Thursday.

Police, fire and EMS were called about 2 p.m. Thursday to the 600 block of Southeast 10th Street.

“Investigation so far indicates that the child was in the backyard of a residence with a dog that was attached to a tree by a nylon rope,” said officer Curtis Garrett, public information officer for the Paris Police Department.

“The dog evidently was just moving about and caught the child in the rope, which wrapped around his neck, choking him unconscious. He was transported to a local hospital and transferred to a Dallas hospital by EMS,” Garrett said.

Foggy conditions prevented him from being airlifted to Dallas.

“Investigation is continuing on where adults were in the household,” Garrett said.
