Sixty-eight people turned out for Monday’s opening day of early voting for four open 2-year seats on the Paris City Council, county elections administrator Russ Towers said.
Extended hours from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. prevail again today for the city and for two 6-year berths on the Paris Junior College board of regents.
After that, early voting begins at 8 a.m. but closes at 5 p.m. for the five remaining days of early voting – Wednesday through Friday (May 2-4) and Monday and Tuesday of next week (May 7-8).
Election Day is Saturday, May 12.

Almost 8 out of 10 voters who cast ballots for the city council on Monday were from District 6, where Edwin Pickle is seeking a third 2-year term against challenger Cleonne Holmes Drake.
Fifty-four of the 68 voters cast a ballot in the District 6 council race.
Eight voted in the District 3 race between incumbent John Wright and Marvin Wroten.
Three people voted in the District 1 match-up between Aaron Jenkins and Don Shelton.
Three people also voted in the District 2 competition between incumbent Robert Avila and Sue Lancaster.
In the balloting for two contested spots on the Paris Junior College board of regents, 122 votes were cast – 61 in Place 6, 18 in Place 7, 14 in Place 3, 13 in Place 5, 12 in Place 4, 3 in Place 2, and 1 in Place 1. All were eligible to vote in the District 9 at-large regents berth that incumbent Paul Gene Roden is defending against challenger Curtis Fendley.
The 61 voters from District 6 had votes for the Roden-Fendley election as well as the Pickle-Drake race and also the PJC Place 6 election between incumbent Barney Bray and Ginna Walker Bowman.
Not everyone voted in both the city council and PJC regent races, despite both elections taking place at the Lamar County Courthouse Annex (old post office) from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. Monday..
The Roden-Fendley election drew 43 people from Districts 4, 5 and 7, which have no council elections this year. Eighteen people voted in District 7, 13 voted in District 5, and 12 voted in District 4. That means 79 who voted in the PJC election also were eligible to vote in the council race — but only 68 of them did.
Sixty-one people voted in the Bray-Bowman race in District 6, but only 54 voted in the Pickle-Drake council race.
Of the 14 from District 3 who voted in the Roden-Fendley race, only 8 voted in the Wright-Wroten race.
Of the 3 from District 2 who voted for in the PJC at-large election, all three voted in the Avila-Lancaster race.
However, the opposite trend exhibited itself in District 1, where 3 votes were cast in the Jenkins-Shelton council race, but only one vote from District 1 was cast in the Roden-Fendley election for PJC regent.
In the Place 6 race on the Paris Independent School District board of trustees between Jennifer “Jenny” Wilson and Trase Christian, 14 votes had been cast with about an hour left in early voting on Monday.
Christian has been declared ineligible because his residence is not in District 6, as a result of redistricting, but the discovery came too late to call off the election. Wilson must get at least half of the votes to win the 3-year seat.
If Christian should end up with more votes, the school board would have the option of appointing someone or calling a special election for November.
Here is a look at the precinct-by-precinct voting, as provided by Towers:

Gene C. Hobbs Jr., who will be on the Republican ballot for the May 29 primary election as a candidate for re-election as constable for Precinct 5, had an intriguing post late Sunday on Facebook:
“Found out yesterday that there is a mistake on the mail-out ballots. My name is listed as Gene C. Hodges Jr.!!!”
That’s a particularly embarrassing typographical error, since Hobbs’ opponent in the race is Jimmy Hodges.
Today, Lamar County elections administrator Russ Towers confirmed the misprint.
“I just missed it on the proof,” Towers said.
“I will have to double-check with the Secretary of State’s office to see what to do. I know we are going to have ballots reprinted. Fortunately, it’s not the entire county.”
Every registered voter in the Paris city limits votes in Precinct 5.
Towers said he learned of the problem from Hobbs, who told him one of his constituents called him and told him his name was misspelled.
,About 200 mail-out ballots have been sent out, Towers said.
Hobbs has been the Precinct 5 constable since 2001. He is seeking his fourth 4-year term.
Today is the last day to register to vote for the May 29 election.
First day of early voting for the May 29 primary is May 14. Early voting continues through May 25.
