In honor of Breast Cancer Awareness Month, North Lamar High School Friends of Rachel Club raised $100 for the American Cancer Society during the month of October by selling pink ribbons to staff and students. Adding another ribbon to the bulletin board is FOR Club member, Miranda McNabb.
On Saturday, November 5, the acoustic duo of Brumley and Gardner will make their first appearance inParisat That Guy’s Coffee Listening Room. Nick Brumley, a Texas Music Award nominee teams with classically trained Eric Gardner to create music they describe as “Texas Whiskey Soul with a Dash of Louisiana Spicy.” The musicians, located inMarshall,Texas, have performed inTexas,Louisiana, andArkansas.
Brumley, who grew up outside of Dallas in Farmersville, began playing the guitar and song writing when he went to college. His CD Nick Brumley, recorded in a friend’s living room, earned him a nomination in 2010 from the Texas Music Awards for Male Vocalist. In the same year, Nick met Eric when the bass player stepped in for Nick’s band, The Good Time Rounders. Their musical chemistry was immediately evident, and Nick invited Eric to accompany him in a solo engagement he had booked at The Hard Rock Café inDallas. After the magic of that performance, the two formed Brumley and Gardner.
There sound is rooted in Americana/Folk music, but these stellar musicians take the genre into uncharted territory. Eric’s mellow upright bass sounds perfectly complement Nick’s soulful tenor voice, and Nick’s percussive, strumming playing style meshes flawlessly with Eric’s slap and tickle of his bass. Together, it’s difficult to believe so much sound is created by only two musicians.
In September of 2010, they recorded their first album, Wild Life, with Grammy award-winning producer, Chris Bell. Bell has created albums with musical icons such as The Eagles, Destiny’s Child and Erykah Badu. In an intense session lasting just under 13 hours, the three recorded 9 songs. According to ReverbNation, Brumley and Gardner’s music “sounds as if Townes Van Zandt and Ledbelly were somehow able to simultaneously father a child with Janis Joplin, bringing gritty, down home soul to terms with old blues and a touch of psychedelia.”
Thanks to Brumley’s masterful songwriting, the duo’s live shows offer a variety of styles taking listeners on a roller coaster ride of emotions and celebrating the beauty of acoustic music.
Tickets for Saturday’s performance are $15 and can be purchased at www.thatguyscoffee.com. The venue opens at 7:00 and the concert begins at 7:30. For information or questions about the venue or about tickets, call Gerald Hutchings at 903-272-9687.

She is reading Sophie’s Masterpiece to the students while they work to identify character traits and supporting their answers with text evidence
Mrs Cass’ fourth grade classes have been working hard to collect pennies for patriots. Joel Hinson, Issac Boehlar, and Matthew Clark watch while PAL representative Ally Moffitt adds the last pennies to the class jug. Way to go Students!!
